SmartWool: the Official Clothing and Sock
It’s an exciting week for ultra running in Colorado. The 23rd running of the Hardrock 100 starts on Friday, July 10th in Silverton, CO and this year we’ve partnered as the lead clothing and sock partner of this iconic ultrarunning event. We’re also cheering on SmartWool Athlete Darcy Piceu as she aims for an unprecedented fourth-consecutive victory.
“Darcy is a legend among women, and men, and is a key piece of our athlete team and community of Fan Field Testers,” says Athlete Manager Alex Pashley. “Providing our fullest support to an event so important to Darcy and the entire SmartWool run family is an opportunity we welcomed with enthusiasm. Race organizer Dave Garland and his team have built a truly special event—one that pushes the absolute limit of possibility for the mind and body—and we’re thrilled by the chance to become involved as the official sock and apparel supplier.”
“The partnership between SmartWool and Hardrock is such a wonderful fit because they are two organizations with a lot of integrity and a focus on community. My relationship with SmartWool, and the support I receive through their products and athlete network, is immensely important not only on race day but also on every training day. I mean, what other athlete on the line can say their teammates, with their own busy calendars, have taken the time to travel to a remote corner of Colorado to cheer them on? How cool is that?” asks Darcy.
Racers brave enough to toe the line at the Hardrock 100 will face the challenge of 67,984 vertical feet of elevation change over 100.5 miles. The loop course starts and finishes in Silverton, deep in the San Juan Mountains. Runners will top out above 12,000 feet in elevation 13 times and travel through the towns of Telluride and Ouray. Darcy’s fastest time to date among her three consecutive victories is 29 hours 9 minutes.
Over such a long period of time moisture management becomes critical to success. As hours tick on, the benefits of the world’s most comfortable run socks and apparel also become apparent. Each competitor will receive a complimentary pair of SmartWool PhD Run socks, featuring a run-specific 4-Degree Elite™ fit, as well as a custom, 100-percent Merino wool NTS Micro 150 Tee.
We’re bringing athletes, staff and volunteers to camp at La Montana near Silverton this week to back Darcy’s bid for history. Ultrarunning is as much about the sport’s tight-knit, eccentric community as it is the deep, lonesome places athletes find themselves at times over unbelievably long distances. With this in mind, Camp SmartWool will welcome race participants and fans – if you’re planning on visiting, please stop by and say hello.
If you can’t make it to the Hardrock 100, we’ll also be at the 2015 Gnar Runners, Steamboat Springs Running Series and Vail Mountain Trail Running Series, as well as the Ragnar Relay and Trail Series.
