a quick shopping guide
For those of you who enjoy Merino wool socks year ’round, you probably have favorites already, but when you’re gift giving you may be choosing socks by activity…sometimes for an activity you don’t spend time doing. So here is a little help giving the gift of winter socks this holiday season.
One question we hear a lot this time of year is, “What are the best cushioned socks?” If someone on your gift list will be snowshoeing, winter camping or hitting the slopes, cushioned socks will feel great and provide extra warmth; so here are some top choices:
Our Trekking Heavy Crew Socks and Mountaineering Extra Heavy Crew Socks are tried and true winter classics. They offer exceptional comfort, support and warmth for winter activities and have all the benefits you expect from a built-to-last Merino wool sock.
The Women’s PhD® Outdoor Heavy Crew Socks and the Women’s Hunt Heavy Crew Socks are similar to the men’s models, but have the unique weave and performance benefits of our PHD line. These can be worn on their own, but some SmartWool fans like to wear a lighter liner sock as well. We think you’ll be please with either experience.
Living in the Rockies we tend to think of tall, thick socks when we think of winter…footwear that is perfect for skiing or spending a day in boots, but let’s not forget about our runners, cyclists and cross country skiers who may not need quite so much padding.
Our new Run Light Elite line for men and women have more cushioning in the heel and ball of the foot for year-round activity and the snug fit keeps them in place. Although we built them for running, we have lots of feedback that they are a great multi-purpose sock to use as a baselayer or on their own.
If you’re giving gifts to anyone who stays outdoors year ’round (or just someone who likes warm feet in the winter) we hope these “est cushioned sock” picks will help you fill out your shopping list confidently!
